空時 The Emptiness of Time

My third investigation into Queer Temporality against capitalist chrononormativity together with Buddhist Emptiness,

空時 (The Emptiness of Time) is a durational ink installation that unfolds through the ritualistic writing of the Heart Sutra (般若波羅密多心經), a foundational Buddhist text on Emptiness (śūnyatā; 空). Inspired by Wang Dongling’s (王冬齡) chaos script (亂書), the work begins with meditative, structured calligraphy and gradually dissolves into a chaotic, asemic writing. This shift reflects a descent—not into disorder, but into a liberatory unmaking, where the functionality of language, writing, and art is questioned as a medium of fixed meaning. Instead transforming into a site of queer and temporal resistance.

Across seven unmounted scrolls, thin paper bears the traces of this transformation. Some hang flat, others bent, crumpled, or spill to the floor. Their surfaces tremble with the space’s air currents, conveying an anxious choreography of fragility and instability. The materials are deliberately unrefined: papers are haphazardly attached to the scrolls, their creases and inconsistencies left exposed. This unpolished aesthetic conveys an uneasiness, vulnerability, and alienation— one sprouted from a refusal to conform to the capitalist goals of productivity and efficiency.

As writing unravels into gestural mark-making, the scrolls become a visual record of time not as progress, but as breakdown—an undoing of legibility, linearity, and control. In resisting chrononormativity, the capitalist structuring of time as efficient and forward-moving, 空時 aligns itself with both Buddhist and Queer Temporalities: an individual, contemplative, and ever changing experience and phenomenon.

My work is a disruption of this capitalist chrononormativity; a reflection of time unmeasured, unconcerned with productivity nor efficiency.
